Pinball machine maintenance is important, and not difficult. You don't have to be a pinball mechanic. The first rule is PLAY YOUR GAME! The enemy of pinball is inactivity. When they sit unused a long time, all the moving parts get stiff, stuck, and dirty. Regular playing is crucial, especially for electro-mechanical machines. Even on solid state games, with less moving parts, regular use still keeps all the switches clean. On multi-player games, play a 2 or 4 player game, that will use parts that are not normally involved in a single player game. Simply playing the game will keep it in good working order. Let it sit, and you are asking for trouble, especially in damp basements.
Next is keeping the playfield clean. A steel ball rolling around in dirt is like rubbing the playfield with sandpaper. Clean the playfield with Naptha, available at any hardware store. Then wax the playfield ( and the ball) with car wax. Carnauba wax is best. You want a wax with lots of carnauba , and not a lot of water. Mothers, and Meguires are very good. Kit wax is easy to apply , and a good second choice. Wait till you see how much faster a clean, waxed game is. It will also save your playfield from wear.
Finally, level out the machine. I find most of the machines I first work on don't have enough pitch to the playfield. The steeper the pitch, the faster and more exciting the game. Too much pitch is no good though. The rule of thumb is if the flippers can regularly send the ball to the top of the playfield, its not too steep. Hockey pucks make great levelers, especially if the leg levelers are all rusted and cant turn. A puck under each rear leg can do wonders for game play, and you can just pull them out if you don't like it.
Finally, Batteries. Digital games have batteries to retain high scores when the game is turned off. The batteries get old and leak. The leaking fluid is corrosive, and can cause hundreds of dollars of damage. Different games have different type of batteries. Some, if you have a little bit of mechanical skill, can be easily changed. Others, only a pinball technician can change. You can email or call me, tell me the game, and i'll advise you over the phone, how to change the batteries .
